An accurate demarcation of informal settlements and termite-affected properties is now underway in Lautoka before monetary assistance is given to those who need to build new homes.
A meeting last week of the Termite Task Force discussed the task force’s terms of reference.
“The allocation of a substantial $3 million budget further underscores the Government’s commitment to tackling this pervasive problem head-on,” said Assistant Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, Sakiusa Tubuna.
Commissioner Western Apolosi Lewaqai highlighted the significance of accurate data collection with plans to deploy enumerators to gather crucial data.
“This process will be bolstered by collaborative efforts with the Biosecurity Authority, the Ministry of Housing, and the Housing Authority (of Fiji) to ensure an accurate demarcation of informal settlements and affected properties,” Mr Lewaqai said.
Assistant Minister for Women Sashi Kiran said it was important that public awareness was carried out in the campaign against termite infestation.
“An extensive awareness campaign to encourage affected property owners to come forward and seek assistance without fear of property devaluation,” Ms Kiran said.
