TWENTY eight schools in Lautoka are participating in the clean school’s program, says Lautoka City Council CEO Mohammed Anees Khan.
Mr Khan gave this update during the Global Recycling Day in Lautoka last week.
He said the council-organised program for the city also included subsidising the cost of compost bins for ratepayers.
“So that green and organic waste can be composted in homes and reduce the burden from the Vunato Dump site — 100 per cent market, waste is composted,” he said.
Mr Khan said the council believed in the Connecting the Dots Strategy, an initiative of the Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF).
“Lautoka City’s continues to foster collaborations with grassroots recycling organisations like PRF, development partners like the JICA, UNDP, ADB and USAID, and the public sector in the fight against the waste crisis,” he said.
“This unique approach by LCC serves as a blueprint for other municipalities around the country and the region to follow, inspiring positive changes in waste management practices at all levels.
“This holistic approach is essential and vital in overcoming the waste management crisis and ensuring long-term sustainability.”
Mr Khan encouraged other municipalities in Fiji and around the Pacific to adopt similar strategies by embracing the principles of collaboration.
He urged residents and visitors of Lautoka and Churchill Park to actively participate in the I Recycle program and to support sustainable practices in their daily lives.
