The Sugar Cane Growers Council (SCGC) has welcomed Government support measures for cane farmers, saying they provide much-needed stability during a challenging economic period.

The Council acknowledged the Government’s contribution toward the $85 per tonne guaranteed cane price for the 2025 crop season, including a $22 per tonne top-up, as well as additional assistance such as harvesting support and farmer incentives.

“This level of intervention reflects a clear recognition of the importance of cane growers to Fiji’s economy and rural communities,” the Council said.

“At a time when growers are facing increasing costs, particularly from rising fuel prices, such support provides much-needed stability and confidence within the industry.”

SCGC also commended broader Government measures aimed at easing the impact of global fuel price pressures.

“These actions demonstrate responsible leadership and a proactive approach to safeguarding key sectors, including the sugar industry,” the statement said.

The Council noted that growers had remained resilient despite ongoing challenges and urged them to take practical steps to strengthen their operations.

“Growers are encouraged to make maximum productive use of available land, consider alternate and short-term cropping opportunities, and integrate livestock where feasible,” it said.

“These measures will strengthen farm resilience and contribute meaningfully to national food security.”

SCGC also advised growers to remain cautious in financial decision-making and to rely on verified information.

“Managing borrowing carefully, improving farm efficiency, and making better use of available land will be critical to navigating current challenges,” the Council said.

The Council reaffirmed its commitment to working with Government and industry stakeholders to ensure support measures deliver tangible benefits.

“Through responsible action, the industry will remain resilient and move forward.”
