Namaka resident Alipate Bilavucu has called for the return of constituency voting.
In his submissions before the Electoral Law Reform Commission in Nadi on Monday, Mr Bilavucu said constituency voting was a much simpler system.
“With the constituency voting we knew the people who we were voting for,” said Mr Bilavucu.
“And if they made it to Parliament, they were answerable to us. We were able to reach them directly and voice our concerns with them.
“The current system, yes, the candidates visited our areas during campaigning, but when they got into Parliament or the Government they forgot about us.
“The system we used before was better.”
Mr Bilavucu said the age limit for voting should also be changed.
“Can we bring the voting age up from 18 to 21? I think 18 is still too young for people to be voting.”
Consultations in the Western Division began this week in Sigatoka and will be held in various parts of the region throughout the week.
