The 10th Lapita Conference which will be held at the University of the South Pacific next week is expected to generate a lot of discussion and dialogue on the discipline of archaeology in the region.

The theme of this year’s conference is Weaving the Past, Present and the Future, which according to University of the South Pacific’s senior history lecturer Dr Nicholas Halter, will investigate the change in population in Fiji.

Dr Halter said the conference will involve panel discussions on the evolving population in the Pacific and how pacific islanders have evolved and adapted to change over the years.

“The interesting part of the conference is to find out the similarities of these early human settlers,” he said.

According to archeologist Elia Nakoro, the conference has already garnered interests from archeologists from as far as Germany.

Mr Nakoro said so far as many as 70 archaeologists had registered for the conference with some notable scholars.

Dr Halter said the conference which begins next Monday, was an opportunity for history enthusiasts and school students to learn more about Lapita and Pacific history.

Members of the public are urged to pre-register for the event with a fee of $5 per day, the conference will conclude on Saturday with a field trip to the Sigatoka sand dunes which is a Lapita site.
