COMMISSIONER Western Manasa Tagicakibau is concerned about the abuse of supplied water despite several warnings being issued.
He once again urged residents to manage carted water wisely as the dry spell was forecasted to continue into the new year.
“People are complaining to ministers and members of the Opposition that not enough water is given to them and some are claiming that water is not reaching them,” he said.
“I would like to state that people too must understand. We are not in a normal situation here in the West.
“We have highlighted that we are in a long dry spell and sources of groundwater are depleting very fast and our people who rely on these groundwater sources are affected.”
He said water given by his office was used for livestock by some farmers.
“The water we give them is merely for consumption, cooking, drinking and for some washing if the household has babies or the elderly and sick.
“The Agriculture Ministry does provide tanks and water to livestock most affected by the dry weather so we are asking people to please manage the water supply wisely.”
According to Mr Tagicakibau, there were instances where a week’s supply of water was used up in two days.
“When we investigate we find it was abused.
“It takes both parties, public and us, to really work together so we are asking people to use water wisely.”
