THE International Partnership program’s “CommonSensing” project aims to build disaster and climate resilience focusing on small island developing states.
This was highlighted by Dr Elena Lobo, the senior space innovation facilitator from Satellite Applications Catapult, at the workshop jointly organised by IPP and the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources held at the Novotel Hotel convention centre in Lami today.
Dr Lobo said the project was based on a partnership between Fiji, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and a consortium of international partners.
“We are hoping this will be an important contribution to Fiji’s climate resilience we realise this is a huge undertaking for any country, very much for a country such as Fiji, which has so many islands of different sizes and is very much exposed to the challenges of climate change,” Dr Lobo said.
She added the project aimed to facilitate the use of satellite technologies to assist in working towards sustainable development.
Minister for Industry, Trade, Tourism, Lands and Mineral Resources Faiyaz Koya said through this project, IPP sought to maximise the practical impact on the lives of Fijian people.
“This project will also help us find solutions and enhance our decisions making through the use of satellite and remote sensing technology,” Mr Koya said.
The project initiated in January of this year will roll out over the next three years.
The project is run by UK Space Agency.
