A coastal inundation alert is now in force for parts of southern Fiji as a low pressure system generates swells likely to trigger sea flooding during high tides.

The Fiji Meteorological Service says southern coastal areas from Natadola through the Coral Coast to Sigatoka, along with the Mamanuca Islands, Kadavu, Vatulele and the southern Lau Group, are at risk.

“A low pressure system to the far south of Fiji is generating and directing moderate southwesterly swells that may result in coastal flooding,” the weather office said.

Sea flooding is expected during high tides today and tomorrow, with tides forecast at around 1.9 metres this morning and 1.8 metres on Thursday.

Authorities warn that rising sea levels could push debris onto roads and create hazardous conditions for coastal activities.

Members of the public in affected areas are urged to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary movement along vulnerable coastal zones during high tide periods.
