Vodafone Fijiana XV head coach Ioan Cunningham has praised senior player Asinate Serevi and rising talent Alfreda Fisher ahead of their Oceania Rugby Women’s Championship opener against Tonga today at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka.
Cunningham said Serevi’s presence is key to the team both on and off the field.
“Asinate’s experience is vital for us not just in game but also in how she carries herself off the field. She sets standards and helps guide our younger players through her leadership and example,” he said.
While Serevi brings experience, Cunningham highlighted the exciting rise of Alfreda Fisher, who has emerged as a young leader within the group.
“Alfreda’s been great. She’s a young leader who has grown in stature over the last few weeks.
“She’s learning how to be her true self as a leader through her rugby skills and communication. She’s growing every day.”
As the Fijiana XV prepare to take on a physical and passionate Tonga side, Cunningham has called on local fans to turn up in numbers and support the team.
“We’re really looking forward to today’s match against a tough Tongan side. We’d love to get our supporters and fans out at Lawaqa to watch these incredible female athletes representing Fiji,” he added.
Kick-off is scheduled for 2pm.
