A new era has dawn for the Christian Mission Fellowship College as the school prepares to compete in a Coca-Cola Games for the first time.

About 28 athletes from the Suva-based school have managed to qualify for the 2023 Coca-Cola Games at the HFC Bank Stadium next week.

Team manager David Ali says this was a historic achievement for the school, as they rarely participated in any high school sports competitions in previous years.

“We received the green light to participate in athletics from our new principal at the beginning of the year. When the students learned that they were allowed to take part in athletics, many of them were excited and had put their hands up to represent the school,” Ali said.

Since then, CMF has been preparing their athletes since the beginning of the first school term and they hope to make their first Coca-Cola Games a memorable one.

“After receiving the green light to compete in athletics, we have been receiving tremendous support from parents and teachers in preparing our athletes.

“The commitment the athletes have shown towards training over the past few weeks has been very uplifting.”

Ali says they will use this year’s Fiji finals to expose their athletes to allow them to get a feel of such a huge tournament.

“We just want our athletes to experience the atmosphere of such a huge tournament.

“But it will take a few more years and other tournaments like the Fiji finals before we can slowly build ourselves up.”

While the school is totally new to athletics, Ali believes that their athletes have what it takes to compete at the Fiji finals.

“Just from looking at some of the performances from a few athletes over the past few weeks, I believe some of them have what it takes to compete, and even scoop medals.”

Ali thanked all the parents of the athletes and teachers from CMF for their support towards their athletics team.
