People these days are more concerned about the cleanliness of their compound and country, rather than the cleanliness of their inner soul, said Assistant Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations, Youth and Sports Alvick Maharaj.

He made the comments while speaking as a chief guest at the Votualevu Sanatan Branch Diwali Mela celebrations in Nadi on Saturday night.

“We don’t see people having a clean inner soul these days,” he said.

“What we see these days is that people put emphasis on how clean their house is, how clean their village is and how clean their country is.

“We have immersed in this outer cleanliness so much that when the neighbour’s dog comes and dirties your compound, one will not look at the inner cleanliness, but one will look at the cleanliness of the house.

“That’s why I say these days we put the cleanliness of neighbours compound more than the cleanliness of our inner soul.

“Sanatan Dharam teachers that if we want to take our religion forward, if we think our religion is drowning, it is upon us to decide what we can do. Start from your house.”
