HOSTING the fierce Pacific rivalry between the Vodafone Fijiana XV and Manusina Samoa at the 4R Stadium in Govind Park, Ba this Saturday marks a significant step forward for the development of women’s rugby in Fiji and the region.

Oceania Rugby Competitions manager Wayne Schuster believes taking international rugby to new areas will help grow the sport’s footprint and inspire future generations.

“Seeing the traditional Fijiana–Manusina rivalry take place in Ba is quite significant. For the people of Ba to host this fixture is something very special,” Schuster said.

The Oceania Rugby official highlighted the importance of expanding the game beyond its usual venues, noting that Ba will experience international women’s rugby for the first time.

“Taking women’s rugby into an area of Fiji that has never hosted international rugby is exciting. It’s a new territory, and that is significant,” he said.

“Growing the game in these areas can only be good for rugby. It helps strengthen the sport and its reach across the region,” he added.

He also called on the people of Ba to embrace the occasion, describing it as a rare opportunity for fans to witness top-level rugby firsthand.

“To the people of Ba, this is an amazing opportunity to host an international match in your own backyard. We encourage you all to come out and support both teams.”

Beyond the main fixture, the event will also feature schoolgirls and club teams, creating a pathway for young players to experience the big stage.

“With schoolgirls and club teams also participating on the day, it’s a great source of inspiration. To be able to play on the same field ahead of an international match is something truly motivating for them,” Schuster said.

With a home crowd expected to turn out in numbers, the occasion promises not only high-quality rugby but also a celebration of growth, pride and opportunity for women’s rugby in Fiji.
