A package containing marijuana, methamphetamine, suki, mobile phones, chocolates and snacks was intercepted after being thrown into the Suva Corrections Centre in Walu Bay this morning.
The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) said alert officers on duty intercepted the illegal package at about 11am, when inmates were moving from their dormitories to the kitchen mess hall for lunch.
According to FCS, the suspects deliberately targeted the prison’s lunch routine in an apparent attempt to smuggle contraband into the facility.
Among the items seized were 17 rolls of marijuana, two sachets of methamphetamine crystals and 45 rolls of suki.
Officers also recovered one touch-screen mobile phone, one button mobile phone, one thumb-sized phone and a charging cable.
The package further contained two packets of chocolate, two packets of chewing gum, two packets of Sunrise Bongo bean snacks and a gas lighter.
The Fiji Corrections Service said its surveillance systems and CCTV cameras captured images of the suspects and recorded their vehicle registration details.
Acting Commissioner of Corrections Auta Moceisuva condemned the incident, saying it undermined efforts to rehabilitate inmates.
“This is a prime example of the lack of support from members of the public who continue to fuel this illegal activity. We have identified the culprits through our security systems and CCTV, recorded their car registration numbers, and are now working with the Police to bring them to justice,” he said.
The Fiji Corrections Service is working with the Fiji Police Force to locate and arrest those involved.
FCS reiterated its zero-tolerance policy on prison contraband and said it will continue strengthening surveillance and security measures to prevent illegal items from entering correctional facilities.
