Police have stopped children from visiting a Savusavu marina after reports that some practically lived aboard yachts.
Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said officers were working on the case with the Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Ministry.
The decision to stop children, mostly primary and secondary school students from visiting the marina came in the wake of reports lodged by the marina management.
Marina manager Beverly Wong confirmed that over the years, parents had raised concerns with her about their children living aboard yachts moored at the marina.
“This is without their parents and one of the parents came to me after the one- week school break looking for her son because she wanted him to return to school,” she said.
“These are the kind of visits I get from parents and we are also concerned about theft cases that have happened on the yachts.
“So to protect our customers who sail in from other countries and use our marina, I reported the matter to police so they could help out.”
Ms Naisoro said an investigation was in progress and details of the investigation had also been submitted to the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation.
She said police had visited nearby villages and advised parents to supervise their children.
