The Yasawa Rugby Union received $25,880 boost from a resort to assist its men’s 15s side participate in this year’s Skipper Cup.

The side will now be called the Turtle Island Yasawa Marlins.

Yasawa Marlins centre Moape Qiolevu said the financial support was a huge boost for the players and the team.

“We have some players who are employed while there are some who are not, so this should assist the players and their families during the competition period,” he said.

Qiolevu says the assistance will encourage the players to perform well this season.

“We want to make a difference in this year’s Skipper Cup and we have faith in the team,” he said.

“We are also grateful and honoured to the vanua of Drola as they facilitated the sponsorship with Turtle Island Resort.”

Speaking on behalf of the Tui Drola, Ratu Manasa Naikasowalo, Nacula district spokesperson Lavenia Naivalu said they were proud of the team representing them.

“The vanua with their seven traditional leaders are proud to get behind the team during their Skipper Cup campaign and hope that the team does well this season,” she said
