Minister for iTaukei Affairs Ifereimi Vasu believes chiefs are key stewards who should drive the sustainability of our rich culture, heritage, and traditions for our future generations.

He made this comment while delivering his remarks at the 8th Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Minister for Culture meeting in Vanuatu last Friday.

“Fiji takes pride in its diversity and while my ministry is solely responsible for our indigenous people, we encourage a more inclusive approach in working with, learning from and cross culture participation with our ethnic communities in Fiji,” Mr Vasu said.

“It is our duty to provide the necessary support to our people, communities, and traditional institutions in whatever form to enhance the role in perpetuating our culture and tradition.

“I believe that one way this mechanism can be enhanced is if our traditional leaders, chiefs, big men and forums are supported.”

Mr Vasu assured those present that the Fijian Government was dedicated to growing each work that will foster cooperation and relations with each culture, vuvale in the Melanesian region as a neighbour.

“As Fiji’s newly appointed Minister for Culture, Heritage, and Art, I feel honoured to be in Vanuatu among fellow ministers and senior officials who are passionate and share similar aspirations that foster value in safeguarding our diverse culture and traditions.”
