The fairways are prepped, the clubs are polished, and the rivalries are officially brewing.
Today, the Fiji Society for the Blind’s Annual Charity Ambrose Golf Tournament tees off at the Fiji Golf Club with over 84 golfers.
While the ultimate goal is raising hope and vital funds for Fijians living with blindness or low vision, make no mistake – the competition on the greens is going to be fierce.
All eyes are on four standout teams, each bringing their own flavor of intensity to the tournament.
First up is “4 Irons”, made up of Eroni Mavoa, George Nacewa, David Qiolevu and Lusi Leqa, the champions from a charity ambrose tournament last month.
They arrive with targets on their backs, carrying the quiet confidence of players who know exactly what it takes to win. They aren’t just looking for a good time; they’re looking for a repeat.
“We know the course, and we know the pressure,” says captain Eroni Mavoa.
“Obviously, we didn’t come here to make numbers. We came to remind everyone why we are champions.”
Looking to dethrone them is the Fiji Times team, a powerhouse squad led by the formidable Sikipio Fihaki, the 2001 Suva Grammar Deans winner.
His teammates are Jai Lal, Suresh Prasad and Steven Yam. Known for their strategic play, this team has been the talk of the tournament hosts, Pirates Golf Club all week.
They have the talent, the drive, and a singular focus on taking the top spot.
“Respect to the ‘4 Irons’, but past victories don’t sink putts today,” Sikipio Fihaki states flatly.
“My team is dialed in. We’re leaving everything on the course, and we’re walking away with the win.”
And then there is Marsh, the wild cards led by the tournament’s own Auctioneer and MC, Wayne Wong, alongside Tomasi Tuitoga, Lewis Sahai and Eric Nand.
What they might lack in pure intimidation, they make up for in sheer momentum and unshakeable team spirit. Wayne is known for working a crowd, but tomorrow, he’s ready to work the fairway.
“Let the other guys and gals stress over their swings,” Wayne laughs.
“We’re playing with heart, we’re playing for the cause, and we’re going to steal this tournament right out from under them while they’re busy over-thinking.”
The fourth team is Shipping Services – an all women’s team made up of Barbara Naisara, Soni Matthews, Loata Maraia and Merelita McCarthy, the Fiji Golf Club Championship women winner.
They bring a refreshing mix of precision, composure, and quiet determination.
“We’re here to show that women belong at the top of the leaderboard just as much as anyone else,” says Merelita McCarthy.
“Every drive and every putt is proof that strength, skill, and heart have no gender. Tomorrow, we’re not just playing golf – we’re playing to inspire.”
It’s the perfect storm of skill, strategy, and swagger. Whether it’s the proven champions, the strategic powerhouse, the spirited underdogs, or the trailblazing women’s team, tomorrow’s tournament promises fireworks on the course.
