The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre re-opened its doors in Rakiraki on Friday, after six months. Director Shamima Ali said they had to close the Rakiraki office because of staff shortages.
“We can once again offer services to the women, girls and children in Ra,” she said.
Ms Ali told the guests present at the re-opening that 64 per cent of women in Fiji suffered from domestic violence in their homes.
“This is from their partners, from the people who are supposed to love them so much.
“One in three women get raped and who are they getting raped by – very few strangers. 96 per cent of the perpetrators are known to the survivor. As you know, many of these survivors are children.
“Out of that 96 per cent, 76 per cent are relatives in their own homes, blood relatives and that is shocking and that should not be happening.
“That’s why we are here today, because we want that atrocity against women and children to stop.”
