The importance of mindset and attitude in the development of young rugby league players in Fiji is a central focus for Wise Kativerata, the head coach of the Vodafone Fiji Bati.
While acknowledging the abundance of talent that exists in the country, Kativerata emphasises a positive attitude is crucial for success in the sport.
Drawing a distinction between rugby league and rugby union, Kativerata underscores the higher level of professionalism is in rugby league.
“Rugby league is a bit different then rugby union, we are more professional, we run programs, and everything is on time,” said Kativerata.
“If the training is at seven o’clock, be there at six o clock, you get ready at half past so when the training is at seven, we start at seven.
“And by one hour like eight o’clock we go home.”
Kativerata is encouraged by the increasing participation of schools in rugby league.
“To get the rugby league up this year, we have got about 100 schools playing, 34 schoolgirls playing so the sports, itself is growing.
“We are going to Vanua Levu next week.
“When we arrive on the eighth, we are going to Savusavu, Labasa and attend the Fiji Day so people get to know that there is a sport out there called rugby league, it’s your way out of Fiji.”
