The Tui Macuata and former president, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, has described the Ratu Sukuna Day celebration in Labasa as a success.
He also thanked the Government and commended the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs for bringing the event to Vanua Levu, which drew nearly 10,000 people yesterday.
“The celebration has been successful and such event should be a national celebration around Fiji because it talks about the history and structure of the iTaukei Affairs,” he said.
Ratu Wiliame also expressed support for the teaching of Fijian history, including the arrival of the early Fijians and the Nakauvadra origin story, from the primary school level.
His comments follow concerns that some parts of Fiji’s history have been removed from the school curriculum.
Now settled back into village life following his retirement as president, Ratu Wiliame said he was enjoying time with family.
“I will continue to do what I love, and that is to preserve and protect our oceans,” he said.
“Life is good and I am enjoying every minute of it.”
