THE International Albinism Awareness Day was commemorated on Friday at Ratu Sukuna Park in Suva.
Under the global theme, “Proudly in my skin: Celebrating all skin tones”, the event brought together people living with albinism, healthcare workers, and stakeholders to raise awareness and advocate for inclusion.
Speaking at the event Albinism advocate Joanna Matavesi encouraged self-acceptance and confidence.
“Being proud in my skin means embracing who I am and recognising my worth,” she said.
Director of Hospital Services Dr Mike Kama reaffirmed the Ministry of Health and Medical Services commitment to strengthening support services for people living with albinism.
“The Ministry of Health and Medical Services remains fully committed to strengthening the national response to albinism through a more coordinated, structured, and sustainable approach,” Dr Kama said.
Fiji has one of the highest rates of albinism globally. According to Dr Kama about one in every 700 iTaukei people in Fiji lives with albinism.
