The Fiji School of Medicine (now the College of Medicine, Nursing & Health Sciences) celebrated its 140-year milestone in Tamavua yesterday.
Acting pro-vice chancellor Dr Joseph Veramu said the theme, “Honouring the Past, Embracing the Future, and Celebrating Excellence in Health Professional Education,” beautifully encapsulates the journey of the FSM.
“We honour our history as the first medical school in Fiji and the Pacific,” Dr Veramu said. “We pay tribute to the thousands of graduates who, over generations, have served our communities with compassion, dedication, and distinction.
Kanbar Hossein Bor remarked that 140 years ago, the foundation for medical education in Fiji was established with the aim of training local professionals to serve their communities.
“Today, that vision has blossomed into a regional powerhouse of health education, producing generations of doctors, nurses, and health professionals who have served not only Fiji but the entire Pacific with distinction,” stated Mr Bor.
Also present at the event were Assistant Health Minister Penioni Ravunawa, Turaga Roko Tui Colo Ratu Apenisa Kalokalo Sere Loki, the vanua o Matanikutu, alongside a 1974 alumnus, Dr Apenisa Ratu.
