The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has launched an investigation into the assault of an inmate by a prison officer at the Lautoka Corrections facility after a CCTV video of the incident surfaced on social media.

The video, dated June 14 this year, showed the officer dragging the inmate before repeatedly punching and kicking him.

It is understood the incident occurred after the inmate allegedly swore at the officer.

The footage has prompted public concern over the conduct of prison officers and the treatment of inmates within the country’s correctional facilities.

When contacted, FCS confirmed it was investigating the matter and said a statement would be released soon.
