Caution over fake notes

BUSINESS owners and shopkeepers in the Western Division have been urged to carefully scrutinise large bills being presented at stores after the discovery of a fake $100 note with the serial number FF2759142 in Namosau, Ba, on Sunday.

Police spokesman Inspector Josaia Weicavu said the counterfeit bill was discovered by a 28-year-old businesswoman.

“We are requesting shopkeepers to carefully check all large bills presented at their businesses especially while trading at night,” he said.

“Members of the public with information on people producing counterfeit notes are requested to call Crime Stoppers on 919.”

Inspector Weicavu said the recently discovered notes had the following features — no distinctive ‘Fijian head’ watermark, no hidden text and no 18mm OPTIKS security thread.

He added the fake bills were printed on normal paper.
