CATHOLICS in Fiji and around the world celebrate the canonising of the two pillars of the Catholic Church this week, the late Pope John Paul II and John XXIII.
Pope Francis yesterday canonised the late Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII, who are now called Saint John Paul II and Saint John XXIII.
And the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Suva has organised a Symbol of Hope exhibition where people from around Fiji can learn about the lives of the two Popes that were canonised.
Exhibition organising member Mareta Tovata said the exhibition was a time of celebration.
Ms Tovata said they saw the late Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII as role models, an inspiration and encouragement to many.
“For us, Pope John Paul II has indeed been an inspiration and he is special for Fiji as he visited our shores in 1986 and he is the only canonised saint of the church that has ever stepped foot in Fiji,” Ms Tovata said.
“We join the universal church in celebrating something and we hope that the exhibition will help them better understand the lives of the two Popes.”
The one-week exhibition is divided into sections, which is the lives of the two Popes while growing up, their lives as priests and what they did, and their lives as Popes. The exhibition will be open until 7.30pm daily.
