Spot fines were issued to those caught littering during Fijian Drua Super Rugby home matches.
Minister for Environment and Climate Change Mosese Bulitavu told Parliament the fines were issued by trained “litter prevention officers” who were deployed by the ministry to catch litter bugs.
“During all of Fijian Drua’s Super Rugby home matches this year, the ministry staff and the trained litter prevention officers were on site to issue spot fines and conduct clean-ups after the matches,” said Mr Bulitavu.
“This has been partly effective, as we have seen some improvements in litter management during the games.
“For example, 285 bags of waste were collected during the game against the Brumbies held on 15 February 2025 at the HFC Stadium but in the game held with the Crusaders on April 6, 2025, only 63 bags of waste were collected.”
He said other government agencies had joined the ministry’s efforts in the national anti-litter campaign.
“On 15 March this year, the chairman of the Public Service Commission, together with our ministry and the Ministry of Civil Service, conducted a national clean-up campaign across all government ministries and businesshouses at the litter hotspot sites in the 13 municipal councils across Fiji.
“Following a successful turnout, 1061 bags of waste were collected during the event, and the ministry worked with the municipal councils to properly dispose of the collected waste after the event.
“Aside from these clean-up activities, my ministry has facilitated and participated in a number of community and youth group-led clean-up exercises across the three divisions and has also provided clean-up materials such as nylon bags and hand gloves to assist in this good cause.”
