Canada needs thousands of seasonal workers from Fiji and the establishment of a memorandum of understanding between the two countries for a bilateral trade agreement could help achieve this, says former Fiji educator Santokh Basra.

Mr Basra has been living in Canada for more than three decades and has been actively supporting the Fijian diaspora there.

“If serious discussions are done at the diplomatic level, we can have Fijians working in Canada for six months, earning money, coming back and spending money here,” Mr Basra said.

“That would help Fiji, but the government is only focusing on seasonal workers going to Australia and New Zealand.

“Those countries were the old traditional policy stuff.

“Now, in this modern world, you have to go beyond that. Go to other countries because they also need you.”
