All Blacks men’s 7s coach Tomasi Cama Jr believes the Fiji Airways men’s 7s side can still bounce back and be a top contender at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Cama, after winning the Hong Kong 7s title with New Zealand on Sunday, says the Fijian side needs to re-look at a few things.
“They just have to look within. As individuals, as a team where they are at. I think preparation is a big thing, the way they prepare,” the former New Zealand 7s captain said.
He said the game had evolved over the years and strategies needed to be put into place to counter it.
“You got to have some sort of game plan now. The game has moved on, it has changed. It is not just flowing free style rugby.”
New Zealand met Fiji in the cup quarter-final and won 19-12 with a last ditch try.
Cama said if the Fijians could clean out a few areas of their play, they would be a team to reckon with.
“I think if they can put a plan in place around contact, keeping the ball alive, around the kicking game, which is important now.
“If they can do that, they are not too far. If they have a game plan and work through, it’s just hard work. You just got to work hard off the ball to execute things these days. I’m sure they’ll have a look back and come back a better team.”
The Fiji team returns today and will now prepare for the Singapore tournament scheduled for early next month.
