THE Government should pay for a constituency office for elected ministers in each district.

This was highlighted by Navoci villager Taniela Momoelevu during the review of the electoral laws in Nadi yesterday.

“I agree on having a government elected representative in each district,” he said.

“The person will know the problems faced by the district.

“He has lived it, he has experienced it and will be able to voice that out in Parliament.

“So, we would agree to bring back the previous selection for district constituencies because we believe those elected would be able to voice our concerns and our needs.”

Meanwhile, Commissioner Prof Warden Narsey asked those present at the consultation if the government ministers they had voted for in the last election had taken the initiative to visit them.

“The last elections took place two years ago,” Prof Narsey said. “Have any of those members of Parliament who you voted for come to visit you again? To ask how you were, do you have any problems, do you want us to address those problems.”

Mr Narsey supported the idea of having a constituency office for elected government ministers.

“It is a suggestion that has been raised to us and we think it is a good idea and good suggestion.”
