OUTRIGGER on the Lagoon Fiji guest service manager Salote Naisua yesterday recommended that compensation provisions in the Work Care Bill and Accident Compensation Amendment Bill be reviewed.

Speaking at the public consultation on the Work Care Bill and Accident Compensation Amendment Bill in Nadroga yesterday Ms Naisua asked the Standing Committee on Economic Affairs why the compensation amount for permanent injury was more than death.

“Why is permanent injury more than death and will that be reviewed,” Ms Naisua said.

In response, committee deputy chairperson Premila Kumar acknowledged the question.

“It’s a very good question because when you die, you die and that’s it,” Ms Kumar said.

“And then your dependents will get $75,000. I know it’s a good question because your dependents get the $75,000, for how long it will last.

“And for $150,000 because you are living with that disability and you are there and you are going through pain and suffering. So, that is why there is a difference. But one thing, why can’t the amount be more or how can we change this figure to something more practical or reasonable.

“We often forget the size of our economy. If you look at our economy, the size of our GDP, it is around $ 4billon and it is not possible to match very big numbers.”
