The National Fire Authority (NFA) is urging Fijians to prioritise fire safety after a fire destroyed a double-storey home on Matana St, Nakasi in Nausori.

Acting CEO Joel Israel said 13 firefighters battled the intense blaze through Sunday night, extinguishing it at 11.04pm, but the building — occupied by six people — was declared a total loss.

“This incident shows how quickly fires can escalate and why fire safety is critical in every home. Simple precautions can save lives.”

Mr Israel is urging members of the public to check electrical wiring in their homes, remove flammable materials from heat sources, install and test smoke alarms, and maintain clear evacuation plans.

The NFA has launched a full investigation into the cause of the fire.
