Deputy Prime Minister and Communications Minister Manoa Kamikamica has called on the financial services industry to continue to develop innovative and user-friendly digital financial services (DFS) products and services.
While officiating at the launch of the Consumer Council of Fiji (CCoF) “Beyond Access: Consumer Perspectives on Digital Finance in Fiji” report yesterday, he said these products and services must prioritise affordability, and security while addressing the unique needs of Fijian consumers.
“Consumer protection organisations need to continue to play a vital role in educating our consumers about DFS, their rights and available resources to navigate this landscape,” Mr Kamikamica said.
“The technology sector, to work collaboratively to ensure reliable and secure internet infrastructure reaches all corners of Fiji, bridging the digital divide and playing a level playing field for DFS adoption.”
He said the digital revolution was an undeniable force which would continue to reshape every facet of our lives.
“This bridging of the digital divide is good news because it means that more and more people are being connected, and we can safely assume, even with this report, that more people now have access to such digital opportunities, including digital financial services, than previous years.
“For Fiji in partnership with the Telecommunication Authority of Fiji (TAF), and our ICT sector, the government is steadfast in its commitment to expand broadband access throughout Fiji to underserved and unconnected communities. I have to apologise as we have been a bit slow but be rest assured that we are really working hard to try and get this going.”
Mr Kamikamica also cautioned Fijians to be aware of online scams that come with digital revolution, and to take extra-precautionary actions in keeping themselves and their information safe.
