Political leaders who contributed to the decline of Fiji’s sugar industry are now misleading cane farmers with false promises and political rhetoric, says National Federation Party leader Professor Biman Prasad.
Addressing the NFP working committee meeting in Rakiraki on Saturday, Prof Prasad accused certain political figures of exploiting the struggles of sugarcane growers for political gain while failing to offer practical solutions to the challenges facing the industry.
“There are some leaders outside who are playing political games with the farmers,” he said.
“Some who were part of the destruction of the industry, are now trying to champion the sugarcane farmers problems and their issues.
Prof Prasad said the NFP’s role in Government was focused on addressing national and global economic challenges through practical measures rather than political rhetoric.
“NFP in Government has demonstrated that we can provide solutions, one day global prices, global fuel crisis.
“Let me say this again, this crisis is not going to end anytime soon.”
He urged farmers to concentrate on preparations for the harvesting season, assuring them of continued government support.
“So please get ready to harvest the cane, as the Government is already ensuring it will be supporting the farmers.”
Prof Prasad said rising costs were largely being driven by international inflation and freight charges, noting that even the removal of taxes would not prevent price increases on imported goods.
He added that Government’s priority remained protecting jobs, maintaining essential services and ensuring fuel supplies remained available to keep the economy functioning.
