Call for end to tribal fights

LAE – All efforts to stop and prevent more ethnic or tribal clashes in Papua New Guinea’s Provincial City of Lae must be made by relevant institutions and authorities because many business houses are seriously affected by the disturbances, business leader, Allan McLay says.

It is stopping employees from the affected areas from attending jobs, he said.

Lae Chamber of Commerce and Industries president Mr McLay said this was one major concern for the business houses in Lae.

“Lae has gained a fearful reputation for ethnic clashes in the last few years, resulting in deaths, rapes and destruction of properties.

“It is true that there is rarely a week without a disturbance somewhere in the settlements of Lae,” Mr McLay, who is the Australian consul, said.
