SIMILARITIES between private security uniforms and those worn by police or military personnel could mislead and confuse members of the public, says Law Reform Commissioner Ana Rokomokoti.
Ms Rokomokoti made the comments during a consultation on the review of the Security Industry Act at the Labasa Civic Centre last month.
She said private security uniforms should be clearly different from those of State agencies.
“The concern is that some security uniforms are so similar to the police or military that you cannot distinguish them. That should not be the case,” Ms Rokomokoti said.
Private security companies should not use uniforms that resemble or mimic those of State agents, she said.
“This can mislead the public and make it difficult to distinguish between State agencies and private security companies.”
She also said the national flag should be reserved for State agents and should not be used by private security companies.
To change this, she said, would be a costly exercise.
