CAKAUDROVE Rugby Union remains firmly in contention for promotion to the Skipper Cup competition after an impressive victory 40-12 over Bua last Saturday.
Union president Ratu Peni Ratuvuki revealed that meticulous planning and preparation following their previous win over Macuata played a major role in the team’s success against Bua.
“After the Macuata game in Round 2, we went back to the drawing board. We assessed our performance, identified the threats posed by Bua, and put together a plan to ensure we delivered another strong performance,” Ratuvuki said.
The Cakaudrove team entered the match with a clear objective, to secure a bonus-point victory and strengthen their chances of qualifying for Skipper Cup competition.
“Our target was to score enough points and secure the bonus point because we knew how important it would be for our qualification hopes,” he said.
The plan worked to perfection as Cakaudrove delivered one of their best performances of the season.
Ratuvuki credited the players for responding positively to the challenge.
“The boys rose to the occasion and delivered exactly what we discussed during the week. Their commitment and determination were outstanding.”
One of the major talking points from the victory was the performance of Cakaudrove’s relatively unknown backline, which Ratuvuki described as the team’s “secret weapon.”
“Our entire backline, from halfback to fullback, was our secret weapon against Bua,” he said.
“Most people only knew Benito Masilevu, but the rest of the backs are new to this level and were largely unknown. They showcased their talent and potential, and the result reflected the quality they brought to the game.”
Ratuvuki also acknowledged the contribution of former Fiji 7s rep Benito Masilevu, who spent time with the squad and shared valuable experience with the younger players.
“He brought a lot of experience and encouraging words to the team. We are thankful for his availability and support.”
While celebrating their success, Cakaudrove’s attention has now shifted to the highly anticipated Macuata-Taveuni showdown.
“We are hoping Macuata wins, but without a bonus point. A Taveuni victory would see Cakaudrove out of the Skipper Cup but if Macuata wins without scoring four tries, then Cakaudrove will qualify,” Ratuvuki explained.
“We’ll be keeping our fingers crossed this weekend”
