Businessman Abdul Kaiyum Rafiq has been elected the new president and chairman for the Board of Control of Lautoka Football Association.

The Design Engineering (Fiji) Limited director’s appointment was endorsed by the Fiji Football Association president Rajesh Patel and Fiji FA Board of Control members.

Rafiq said he was looking forward to his new role.

“I was quite concerned with the Lautoka football team’s performance and it pained me immensely,” he said

“There was no proper guidance for the last couple of years. and I have always been supportive of LFA.”

He said his plans revolved around the importance of identifying local talents from the local club competitions and offer them an opportunity to represent the sugar city rather than relying on ‘imports’.

“The aim is to have 100 per cent home-bred boys to wear the blue jersey so that the local boys are aware they have an opportunity to further their football career.

“So, it’s about placing greater emphasis on the club competitions and I am a great fan of youth development.

“I have confidence in the rest of the elected executive members chosen to run the affairs of LFA and we will be running the association in a transparent and accountable manner.”

Rafiq would be in his new position on an interim basis until December 31.
