WOMEN of Yaroi Village in Savusavu have taken the initiative to make use of available resources to boost the tourism industry in the area.
The women have set up a bure in the village aimed at housing cultural shows and entertainment for tourists.
Co-ordinator Torika Uluiviti said the bure would also be decorated with handicraft items for sale.
“We have come up with a way of earning quick and high income and with this initiative, we are not only economically-empowered but also preserving our culture,” she said.
“The bure will be an opportunity for us to promote the iTaukei culture and also a way for us to sell our handicraft items to the tourists.
“Right now, we are trying to fully-facilitate the traditional house and we are working on improving its walls and roof.”
Ms Uluiviti said it was about time they tapped on available resources to support their livelihoods.
“We have to change our mindsets towards development for our future benefits.
“For us here in Yaroi, this is the first step to many better initiatives ahead.”
