QUEEN Victoria School principal Qalo Lesi says the school has a bullying, stealing and drug problem.

The problematic issues the school faces with unruly students were highlighted when the principal delivered his annual report at the school’s awards ceremony last Saturday where Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum was chief guest.

Mr Lesi said senior students were bullying their juniors and they were also using young students to steal and use drugs.

He said indiscipline in the school was rife that valuable time was being spent addressing issues instead of teaching.

We all know there has been a challenge in every school nowadays to maintain discipline,” he said.

“We have been in the limelight on numerous occasions for indiscipline issues with the senior boys or the senior students bullying the young ones in cases of stealing, using of drugs, we have to spend a lot of time disciplining students on indiscipline issues and that has taken a toll on teachers’ time and those students.”

Mr Lesi said while the school did its best to instil values in the young men, the onus was also on parents and guardians to spend quality time with them during the holidays.

“I’d request our stakeholders — parents and guardians — to spend a lot of time at home with our students during the break and to have some valuable talk.

“Talk about values and counsel them on the importance of attending QVS to mould them to be better citizens of tomorrow,” Mr Lesi said.

He said this year the school had to cut down on student enrolment to ensure the facility could provide the best possible education to each scholar.

Mr Qalo said the student roll this year was 845 compared with 920 last year.
