THE Bula Boys football side kicked off their second phase of preparation for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers, departing Fiji yesterday for New Zealand.
The squad comprising 14 local players from phase one and 14 overseas-based players, will now train together in Auckland before the final 23-member team is selected to travel to Wellington on March 12.
Team manager Kartik Reddy emphasised that no player’s spot is guaranteed, and this phase will allow the coaching staff to assess the best possible squad for the qualifiers.
“This phase gives us the opportunity to see the best possible squad available, as no one’s place is secure until the final squad is named,” said Reddy.
The Bula Boys are fully aware of the challenge ahead, with their amateur status contrasting with the professional experience of the New Zealand All Whites.
However, this disparity in experience only serves to fuel their motivation to showcase their talents in the OFC region.
During their tour, Fiji will play three key warm-up matches in New Zealand, Auckland United FC on March 8 at Keith Hay Park, Eastern Suburbs AFC on March 9 at Madills Farm Reserve and A-League side Wellington Phoenix on March 15.
The squad will then focus on their crucial World Cup qualifier on March 21 at Sky Stadium in Wellington.
