ALL good things must come to an end — except for our faith in Jesus.
These were the parting words of 90-year-old Brother Fergus Garrett, to his colleagues, friends, and former and current students at Corpus Christi Hall in Nasese, Suva who had gathered yesterday to bid farewell to the beloved and highly respected educator after his more than 50 years of service in Fiji’s education sector.
He arrived in Fiji in 1970, taught at various Catholic institutions most notably Marist Brothers High School, and founded the Marist Champagnat Institute.
“My teaching philosophy has always been to act as a friend and brother to my students — not as their master. It’s never been about demanding, ‘Do as I say,’ but rather asking, ‘How can I help you’,” said Brother Fergus.
Quoting Mother Theresa, Brother Fergus reminded his students that God does not ask for success.
