A Fijian man has been charged with murder in Australia in what has been described as “brazen assassination in the streets of Sydney”.
Samuel John Rokomaqisa was charged for the alleged execution-style murder of gangland figure Bilal Hamze, who was shot down in a hail of bullets in Sydney’s CBD last year.
“Today is a breakthrough,” New South Wales’ Police Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty said at a news conference on Tuesday.
“We have a person in custody. Hopefully, there’s more to come.”
He said there were “a number of people” believed to be involved in the alleged murder of Hamze.
Police would allege Mr Rokomaqisa was in a black Audi from which the fatal shots were fired.
“Obviously, there’s more than one person involved in this offence. This was at the prime time of night, the entertainment sector of Sydney.
And a hail of bullets cut down Bilal Hamze, and he died.
“That would have been horrific to witness, and no one should stand for this.” Police believe the alleged murder was part of a “well documented” organised crime conflict.
Mr Rokomaqisa will be produced in court soon.
