A brawl broke out around 6.30pm at a house on Rewa St, Suva, where youths allegedly attacked the occupants of a property under scrutiny by police.
More than 50 police officers were deployed to the scene. They managed to contain the incident and dispersed the youths.
According to eyewitnesses, a group of youths returning from playing touch rugby from a nearby park allegedly attacked youths standing outside the house.
Police Commissioner Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho said occupants of the home had been asked to relocate for their own safety.
“The Incident Management Team set up earlier today had received information of an alleged plan of attack against the occupants of the house of interest along Flagstaff,” he said in a statement.
“Efforts are also underway to get the president of the Lomaiviti Rugby Club to assist police in quelling the situation before another incident or attack occurs. The Incident Management Team will remain operational until we can resolve the issues.”
In an earlier statement, Brig-Gen Qiliho said he had directed the taskforce to investigate those who continued to instigate the attacks and round up investigations into past and recent attacks, investigate the ownership of the property of interest and look into unexplained wealth of those residing at the said property.
