Boxing in Levuka

AMATEUR boxing returns to the Old Capital in Levuka next weekend.

In continuation of Fiji amateur boxing’s preparations for the Olympic Games in Rio, a program has been organised to be held at the Eli Peceli Hall in Levuka on the 25th of this month.

Spokesman for the organisers and Jittu Boxing Club trainer Marika Yalimaiwai said boxers from Suva, Ba, Naitasiri and Levuka would take part in the one-day program.

Yalimaiwai said they would have boxers from the Jittu, Boxing Brave, Naitasiri, Kenani and Warriors boxing clubs taking part in the program.

“The main reason we have organised this program is to give the boxers an opportunity to fight after they have been training for so long,” Yalimaiwai said.

“We have the South Pacific Games next and the Olympic Games in Brazil in 2016 and we need to give our boxers the chance to test themselves before the national team is selected.”

“There has been no boxing program run in the country for some time and this is a perfect opportunity for our amateur boxers to fight and see where they are in terms of preparations for the two big events coming up.”

Yalimaiwai said they wanted to thank MH Levuka, Patterson Shipping and the other sponsors from Levuka who had contributed to the staging of this program.
