THE Mayor and Miss Hibiscus National Open Pairs Trophy has added a bowling element to the 70th anniversary celebrations of the Hibiscus Festival, bringing the sport together with one of Suva’s major annual events.
The two-day tournament, which concluded at the Suva Bowling Club yesterday, was also part of the national bowling calendar and provided an opportunity for bowlers to compete while preparing for upcoming international commitments.
Pretika Lal, playing lead, and Losalini Tukai, the skip, won the women’s pairs, while Rajinesh Prasad, the skip, and Kushal Pillay, the lead, claimed the men’s pairs title.
Game coordinator Litia Tikoisuva said the partnership between the Suva City Council and Suva Bowling Club gave bowlers a strong sense of belonging to the celebrations.
“We were actually happy for the sponsorship and then it sort of gave us a belonging that we belong to Suva and so is the Hibiscus Festival,” Tikoisuva said.
She said the tournament provided important preparation for Fiji’s bowlers ahead of the World Championship and qualifying rounds in November, with several players selected for the national team.
