THE Boston Redz men’s team successfully defended their title after defeating Kaunikuila Islanders 25-14 in a thrilling Basketball Fiji Vodafone Cup Championship final at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva yesterday.
Head coach Jordan Dokonivalu said the team had prepared thoroughly for the championship decider, knowing the Islanders would pose a serious challenge.
“After meeting the Islanders in our opening pool match, we knew they would come back stronger in the final,” Dokonivalu told Times Sport.
“We had seen their attacking style of play, so our main focus was strengthening our defence heading into the final.”
Dokonivalu said retaining the title was particularly significant for the Raiwaqa community, as the team entered the tournament carrying the weight of expectations as defending champions.
“We thank God for His provision in allowing us to defend the title. As champions, we knew every team came into the tournament with the goal of beating us, so this victory means a lot to our players and supporters,” he said.
With the scores close at halftime, Dokonivalu reminded his players of the values that had carried them throughout the competition.
“During the break, I told the boys not to lose sight of teamwork, communication and unity because those are the things that would help us win. They responded well and executed the game plan in the second half.”
The title-winning coach said the team’s attention would now turn to international duties, with several players set to represent Fiji at the upcoming Asia Cup Championship.
“After the Fiji Cup, our focus shifts to the Asia Cup where a number of our players are part of the national squad, so we are looking forward to that challenge.”
Dokonivalu also acknowledged the unwavering support of parents, families, sponsors, well-wishers and the Raiwaqa community throughout the tournament.
