Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad has accused the Public Rental Board (PRB) of “sleeping on the job” amid concerns about misuse of rental flats.

Prof Prasad said some people who should not be living in the flats have been allowed to stay, pointing to a lack of proper oversight by the Board.

“There are some people who have been put in the flats that shouldn’t be,” he said.

While responding to a query during the Meet the Press and Public forum organised by the Fijian Media Association on Thursday evening in Labasa, he said, abuse was common in any system.

“Some people sleep in.”

To address this, the Deputy Prime Minister said, PRB needs to tighten its policies to ensure that the low-rent housing is directed only to low-income families.

He said PRB were now reviewing policies to prevent such problems in the future.
