The Fiji Barbarians 7s team lost twice to Australia at the Oktoberfest 7s tournament in Munich, Germany last week and the Fiji 7s team coach and selectors need to ask the big question: Why?
As a backseat critic, I am of the opinion that Fiji needs to bring in young, big, strong, fit, skilled and fast sevens players to match the Australian 7s team.
Our boys are slim, smaller, fast and skilled but to lose twice to Australia including a 40-7 thrashing in the final, means size does matter in the game of sevens.
It is difficult tackling a big player and when it takes two or three to tackle just one opposition player, an overlap has been created and the quick flow of the ball out to the other equally big and fast opposition players means a try will be scored.
We all want our Fiji 7s team to start well in the 2017/18 HSBC Sevens World Series and I hope the coach or selectors will pick some big, fast, skillful and disciplined players to match any other teams with big and fast 7s players out there.
