Fijian President Jioji Konrote has challenged and encouraged Team Fiji athletes and officials to do well at the Olympic Games in Japan.
With the Games starting on Friday evening with the official opening, Konrote urged Team Fiji members to perform above expectation despite the threat and the infection of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Konrote spoke to members of the contingent through a recorded virtual message that was played at the Team Assembly last week on Friday.
The assembly was also attended by Fiji’s ambassador to Japan, Isikeli Mataitoga.
FASANOC said Konrote commended the athletes for their sacrifi ce during these trying times and urged the athletes to “win with humility and lose with dignity”.
He urged the athletes to go beyond their best. Meanwhile, the first of Team Fiji’s athletes arrived in the Games Village on Monday. These were swimmers Cheyenne Rova and Taichi Vakasama and Sally Yee from table tennis.
Fiji is represented by the men’s and women’s rugby 7s teams, athletics, swimming, judo, table tennis and sailing.
The rugby 7s teams are expected to enter the Games Village tomorrow along with judoka Tevita Takayawa and sprint king Banuve Tabakaucoro.
The Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 will take place from July 23 to August 8 and the Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 which will have Iosefo Rakesa from August 24 to September 5.
