Fiji has so far recorded 192 earthquakes this year, ranging from shallow to deep depth but they did not pose much threat to our local waters.

Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources permanent secretary Dr Raijeli Taga said the seismic activities were the results of the major ongoing movement of plate boundary and seismic movement along the Tonga and Vanuatu subduction zones, as well as the Fiji Micro Plate.

“Fiji is situated in a very seismic active zone that lies between the two major plates known as the Indo Australian Plate and the major Pacific Plate,” she said.

“The movement of these two plates forms a micro plate in Fiji which is called the Fiji Micro Plate.

“On the northern flank of Fiji lies the Fiji Fracture Zone, and the Hunter Fracture Zone lies on the southern flank of Fiji where seismic activity mostly occur.”

She said while earthquakes could not be predicted, people should be prepared for the next “hit”.

“Secure your space, plan to be safe, organise disaster supplies and buildings to be designed according to building codes with reinforced structures to withstand seismic activity.”
